There have been many schemes for the A303 over the years; none of them were satisfactory, and this one, despite years of planning and consultation, does not feel any closer to the solution that is required to reassure all interested parties.

  1. The idea of boring a tunnel HALFWAY across a World Heritage Site should be a complete non-starter. I couldn't see any notes on the percentage of the site you would destroy in the process but surely the mimimum requirement for any scheme would be that there is NO further damage within the boundaries of the World Heritage Site?

  2. The abuse of byways is already extremely problematic in our National Parks, the idea that you want to replace a surfaced, confined road with a byway that cuts across the landscape is horrifying. It will make protecting the monument much harder and more expensive. It will damage the landscape of the World Heritage Site irreparably.

  3. UNESCO has already reported that the current proposal is not sufficient in its protection of the landscape.
