The monument that is Stonehenge is unique. There's nothing like it in the rest of the world. I understand that the section of A303 running past it is always a bottleneck, and that is inconvenient. It would be far less destructive and a lot cheaper to make it a dual carriageway.. There is room all along that stretch, with one or 2 wiggles needed to avoid tumuli. It's obvious that a tunnel is a huge undertaking and potentially damaging to the historic sight...indeed there has already been damage to historic finds. The lighting needed at the entrances to the tunnels would greatly mar the majesty of the Stones. The place is unique and as an earth calendar, marking the passage of the sun through the different points of the year, to have bright lights at eye level is a travesty. It would be like putting floodlights on the passageways at Newgrange. So much is still unknown about Stonehenge, embarking on such a huge project in such an incredible landscape would be so detrimental. Our authorities need to show respect for these ancient sites, otherwise what are we? Humans, or machines?
