Stonehenge itself is unique, not only within the UK, but unique in world-wide terms. Further, the monument itself does not stand alone but can only be truly understood in its context as the hub of a vast 'ritual landscape'. True, this has been damaged in the past but our predecessors cannot be blamed for errors made in pardonable ignorance. We now know enough to understand how much more information is there to find and this will be lost completely, or forever compromised, by the proposed road scheme. This will set a dreadful precedent for possible damage to other sites of archaeological significance and will send a terrible message to the rest of the world that the UK does not care about its own heritage. And all this for the purpose of speeding traffic on a road that is congested only at certain times and dates - traffic that is pollutant, fast becoming obsolete, and in many cases unnecessary. Every archaeologist of note and reputation is against the proposed road scheme and I can only add my individual voice to theirs. Please think again before it is too late and irreparable damage is done.
