I am a retired teacher with family in Cornwall so I've used the 303 regularly for many years. I am not a Druid, hippie, traveller or pagan but have found Stonehenge to be a very welcome sight on my journey, sometimes a much needed break and have become very attached to the site. The problem of congestion gets blamed on Stonehenge but really the problem is that the road goes from dual carriageway as far as Basingstoke, then single carriageway just beyond Amesbury so it's the first bottleneck. In fact there are bottlenecks for many miles beyond Stonehenge alleviated with very short spans of dual carriageway. The tunnel plans do not help, they just push the congestion further down. I do not believe that the proposed Southern Route was explored fully. Salisbury gets more congested by the day and would really benefit from a bypass. If that problem alone is not addressed it won't be long before a bypass is crucial. If this idea was explored more I'm sure both sites would benefit hugely and would be much more cost-effective. We know a lot of history is still buried deep underground (as at Blick Mead) and the huge area that would be scared with not only the tunnel itself but also from the huge logistics of works access etc I do not want to see my heritage destroyed in this way...a tunnel would obviously run over-budget and disturb the land so much.
