Stonehenge is noir just the stones, marvellous though they are. It is the whole surrounding landscape. Discoveries are still being made, and it is extremely likely that as our understanding grows, and as technology improves, yet more will be discovered. Already, damage has been done nearby, and that is just from preliminary work. UNESCO has warned against the plan. How would we explain to the world that for a minor inconvenience, we deliberately destroyed this precious site? It does not belong to this country, or to this point in time. It ius a world site and a human heritage.
