Irreparable damage to the WHS, its archaeology and setting, described by UNESCO as a ‘landscape without parallel’

UNESCO’s international advisers say the scheme should not go ahead in its present form

Given the above it is difficult to see how the current plans can be described as heritage improvement. At present, the scheme seems to be mainly economic and infrastructural, with lip service to heritage improvement as long as it doesn’t cost too much. This is unacceptable given Stonehenge’s status as a world heritage site that we are responsible for. I feel that our world standing on heritage would be much diminished if we allowed this to go ahead. A longer tunnel that does not impact th WHS would be much preferably and would fulfil Highways England’s obligations to heritage while maintaining the basic planned infrastructure
