We are now in a climate emergency so dire that if we do not radically change our ways, will make th Earth largely uninhabitable for humans and most other creatures. We got a taste of that last year when, not a great distance from the site of this project, whole groups of houses were burnt out in Dagenham and Wennington in Essex. We must cut emissions drastically and rapidly. It is therefore unconscionable that we should be embarking on massive carbon-intensive projects like this. According to the project's own Environmental Assessment the project will be responsible for over 6 million additional tons of CO2 emissions over a few decades. That is greater than the entire annual emissions of eg Cyprus, Uruguay or DRC. the Welsh government has recently taken the correct approach, screening all its road projects for their climate impacts and dropping the vast majority of schemes as a result. This project should be scrapped at once and further wasted money saved for urgent carbon reduction and climate adaptation needs.
