As the UK’s largest business support group, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is the voice of small businesses and the self-employed. With circa 160,000 members across the UK, we have over 4,000 members in Essex. In November 2020, the FSB conducted a survey of our members in Essex, Thurrock, Kent and London to understand their views on the Lower Thames Crossing, and the impact that it could have on their businesses. It highlighted significant delays in connectivity between Essex, London and Kent due to the congestion around the Dartford Crossing. This acts as a barrier for businesses who wish to conduct trade or provide services within the three areas, and beyond. Small firms and sole traders rely heavily on road networks to be?accessible, efficient, and safe. The survey also showed that 54% found transport congestion a major challenge in running their business. Furthermore, 83% of local businesses support the Lower Thames Crossing, with 57% stating that they believe the crossing would help their business grow. Many feel that it will give them better access to customers, transport hubs, new markets, the ports and a greater talent pool. The survey results also show a great desire in local firms who want to pitch for contract and supply chain opportunities in this multi-billion-pound scheme. Lower Thames Crossing have responded to this and shown real commitment to maximising the opportunities for small, local businesses to become involved. The launch of the Lower Thames Crossing SME Directory is just one example of proactive initiatives in this area, and we have worked together to promote the directory. Many members also report successful pitches by being involved with the Supply Chain School. Utilising small local businesses will bring added value to this project. Not only will this local knowledge be vital, but tendering out to local firms also reduces emissions and ensures that funding stays local. The FSB are keen to see Lower Thames Crossing progress. We look forward to supporting the Lower Thames Crossing in this project. Ann Scott – Essex FSB Tim Aker – Kent FSB
