In any sane society I ought not to have to explain why you should not massively add to carbon emissions, destroy wildlife habitats, wreck landscapes and harm communities by building a road with no sustainable transport purpose and with no economic benefit (Webtag appraisal is fundamentally flawed - National Highways has never demonstrated economic benefit to the nation from road building). In any sane society looking at the threats to the planet, National Highways would cease to exist. But the farce of 'nationally important infrastructure' goes on and the lunatics keep getting the money to stoke the planetary fire; the government, the Department for Transport, the Planning Inspectorate, all the people that should be looking after the future for our children and grandchildren carry on selling that future for some illusory present gain.
