Manston airfield runway is one of only three ever built to such dimensions, and is amongst the widest in Europe and is the eleventh longest civilian runway in the UK. That alone makes it an asset that should be cherished and not ripped up as a short term gain. This airfield is adjacent to HS1 railway which runs from Margate to St Panaceas making it possible to move freight product or personnel to London in a little over 1 hour. If freight traffic was removed from Heathrow and placed at Manston it would give Heathrow breathing space until the third runway can be constructed. Once the airfield is reopened it would be available for local passenger traffic in turn offering some relief to the other London Airports.
