I think that Manston should be reserved for aviation as a strategic asset for the nation. There is a shortage of runway capacity in the south-east of the United Kingdom and Manston could be functioning usefully before Heathrow or Gatwick could be expanded. It could provide worthwhile jobs and training and promote links for East Kent worldwide. I also think that retention for aviation is vital for retaining the landscape character of Thanet. We have essentially a conurbation of the coastal towns of Ramsgate, Broadstairs and Margate that have joined together, if the central plateau is developed for housing we would have an even bigger urban footprint that would put great pressure on the aquifer and services. An airport would retain a a large open space while serving a useful function.

If there are serious investors who believe that they can develop and operate a viable airport at Manston I think they should be given the chance to prove it.
