I have lived here since 2009, I have personal experience of living under the fight path before the airport shut. I know that the low flying aircraft are unbearably noisy and they have a negative impact on my quality of life.
However, the main point of my submission is that the re-opening of Manston as an airport will have a detrimental impact on my business as a specialist heritage bricklayer. Ramsgate is a historic seaside town with beautiful beaches and a wealth of period brick built properties. Many of these properties are listed, and sadly some are in a poor state of disrepair . Ramsgate is also a designated Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) and as such is receiving support from Historic England to ensure that the town’s heritage is used as part of the regeneration of the town’s economy. I am part of the consultation group that is exploring ways to do this. Since the airport closed the town has become very attractive to out of area buyers wishing to buy a reasonably priced home in a beautiful part of Kent. Many of these buyers are acquiring dilapidated buildings within the local area and restoring them, and as a consequence my business is thriving.
Naturally, I am very concerned that if the airport reopens, the regeneration of the town’s buildings will stop as the town will not attract out of area buyers once they realise that it lies under a flightpath that is known historically to be noisy and disruptive to quality of life.
