I believe that Manston Airport should be retained as a strategic resource given that the United Kingdom, once it extricates itself from the European Union will require increased levels of freight carrying capacity from outside the EU. Manston is ideally placed to benefit from this trade. It has close links to Dover and Folkestone and is close to London. Modern jets have much lower noise levels than previous generations of jet aircraft. This negates any potential claims of negative environmental impacts given that the airport has until recently been operating for decades, both with civilian and the far noisier military aircraft. Furthermore Thanet is an economically deprived area with high unemployment. A busy freight airport would create hundreds of jobs locally. Whereas the proposal to build houses on the site where there are existing high levels of unemployment is frankly ridiculous.
