A second runway for Gatwick Airport would be a disaster for our environment. At a time when the entire world is trying to reduce pollution and carbon emissions, to encourage more aircraft travel (just for profit) by creating more runway space sends a very clear message that the UK is not interested in mitigating the effects of climate change. Furthermore, the noise pollution which is already so bad in Crowborough will be vastly increased and will damage our lives even more. Although we are not near the airport (an hour away by road) aeroplanes pass noisily over our house every two minutes throughout the day and increasingly frequently during the night. Employment is already high in this area so more workers will have to be imported to build and maintain the expansion. Local services - Doctor’s surgeries, schools, roads etc. are already overwhelmed so that any increase in population due to expansion of Gatwick Airport will have disastrous effects. The noise impact, particularly of night flights, is already a massive problem in Crowborough. Although our home is almost an hour from Gatwick airport by road, aeroplanes frequently fly directly overhead every two minutes. Any increase in noise levels would be intolerable. Furthermore, the roads, schools and Doctors’ surgeries locally are already full - so where are all the extra employees for Gatwick and their families going to go?
