By Gatwick's admission, a second runway will increase the number of flights to and from Gatwick Airport. However, ANY airport expansion is not consistent with addressing climate change (which is supposed to be considered in all government decisions), as it will inevitably lead to much more fossil fuel being burnt, along with more pollution and worsening air quality. Until we have carbon-neutral flying, air travel must be reduced, not increased. This year's global temperature records, wildfires and floods should be a warning of what climate change can do, and it's only just getting started. The health and wellbeing of the human population should come before the profits of any commercial business. In addition, the emergency runway must be completely re-built in order for 2 runways to be used at the same time - this is not using existing infrastructure.
