The increase in the volume of aircraft flying overhead, if an additional runway to the north of the existing runway is built, will cause increased disturbance from noise and air pollution over a part of Horley which is becoming more densely populated, due to the large housing developments currently being built. An increase in the volume of traffic on the ground will have a detrimental effect on the route to the airport through the town, which is often at a standstill during the day. This road, the A23, is also the route for ambulances transporting desperately ill patients from as far away as Horsham to East Surrey Hospital, which has the only A & E Department in the area.
