Any airport expansion that increases overall emissions could be incompatible with the UK's legal commitments to reduce pollution. We have a global CO2e budget that is non-negotiable. Exceeding this budget is a serious national safety and security risk for the UK. Gatwick must be required to reduce it's emissions at source by 7% per annum (not with offsets) before any expansion can be considered. Any expansion project must require as a condition total emission reductions sufficient to ensure a net negative emissions trajectory in line with the Paris Accord and the UK's 2040 commitment to "jet zero". Any CO2e budget overshoot must result in immediate closure of flight paths to help us to stay within budget until this criteria can be met.
