I object to this proposal on environmental grounds. The extra flights would lead to a massive increase in carbon emissions at a time when these need to be reduced. Suggestions by the industry that this can somehow be avoided appears to be based on technologies that are either unproven or not yet in existence. The impact on the local area in terms of road congestion and demand for other facilities and services is simply not sustainable without completely destroying the rural character of the area around Gatwick. The airport suggests that more passengers will come by train but the rail line is incapabable of further expansion without enormous and disproportionate expense. The airport apparently expects the taxpayer to pick up the bill for most of these costs. There will also be a signifcant noise impact on the surrounding area with consequent health effects.
