From an environmental point of view this development of the emergency runway is disastrous. How can the Government penalise car users and then allow the number of planes to take off and land at Gatwick to double? Also the infrastructure is not in place to cope with the increased passengers arriving and departing. The railway can not be expanded and the roads are already heavily used. House prices are already high in the area and unemployment is low. Gatwick is currently struggling to fill job roles, so any future employees would come from outside the area. The government should look to expand one of the airports in North England E.g Manchester to create more jobs and opportunity there.
