The proposal to expand the airport and to increase the number of flights will increase greenhouse gas emissions both from flights and from the attendant increase in surface transport movement serving the airport. This is entirely at odds with the UK's comittments under the Paris Agreement to limit global temperature rise, and will take further headroom out of forthcoming UK carbon budgets thus requiring other sectors to reduce emissions faster. The continued existence of a liveable planet (and climate) depends on governments stopping the actions that threaten it. This must mean in contraction in aviation, not an increase. It is folly to believe that the worst environmental behaviour such as discretionary leisure flying can continue and be encouraged to grow. I am personally already affected by noise from Gatwick flights and anticipate that the nuisance will increase if this proposal is consented.
