The proposal to use Gatwick's emergency (Northern) runway as a full-time runway is planned to increase flight numbers at Gatwick to the same number as London Heathrow in its busiest year. The arguments used to support this proposal do not address the contribution to carbon dioxide emissions from the extra flights involved. A realistice assessment of effects of extra flights on the Government's "Net Zero" commitments shows that the repurposed runway should not be built. Gatwick Airport's proposal mentions measures taken which, it is claimed, will reduce carbon dioxide emissions on the ground at Gatwick and traveling to/from Gatwick. This appears to be a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the more important problem of the emissions from flights.
