The main issue with this proposed project is an environmental one. It is fundamentally not in line with the urgent need for this country to reach net zero carbon emissions, in terms of physical infrastructure development, disruption to the natural landscape, and enablement of further aviation traffic in the medium to long term. The potential for a positive impact (locally or nationally) which is sufficient to outweigh these negatives is severely unlikely. In terms of my day-to-day life as a Surrey resident, I believe it should be more difficult (and more expensive) for me to catch a flight than to get the train or a ferry, given the relative environmental impacts. Adding additional capacity at Gatwick will take this in the opposite direction, favouring air travel over other options which are less destructive to the environment.
