The need for additional runway capacity is overwhelming. It is an indictment on the UK's ability to deliver major infrastructure projects within anything even resembling a reasonable timeframe that only one additional civillian runway has been built in the UK since the second world war. Over the same period, civil aviation in the UK has expanded hugely and yet here we sit having to debate, again, about whether we need to bring into use a second runway at our second busiest airport. Gatwick is the busiest single runway airport in the world. Of course it needs additional capacity. It is excellently served by the roal and rail network and it can provide this additional capacity without even needing to take any additional land outside of its existing boundary.
