I am very concerned that the new runway at Gatwick Airport will have devastating impacts, both locally and globally. The proposed expansion plan will: 1. Increase the release of greenhouse gases (which are responsible for the climate emergency we’re facing) both through the increase in flights and the additional traffic. This is at a time when we should be seeking to reduce CO2 emissions. 2. It will create more pressure on the rail and road networks serving the airport, with 76 million more passengers per year adding to a further decline in local air quality 3. It will undermine the government’s aviation strategy. The proposal is for a new runway – not bringing an existing runway into regular use, as claimed.
