The roads network and train lines are already overloaded in the area so can not accommodate the additional traffic due to extra flights by opening an additional runway. The extra flights would bring extra pollution and noise. The extra runway would be very cheap for the company that runs Gatwick but they have already shown that they can not run the airport with its present traffic level. Every month their short term business approach leads to major disruptions as the airport is being run at a maximum capacity and even with the extra runway would be at maximum capacity. The company that own the majority of Gatwick are not a UK company and are not paying any tax contribution to the infrastructure to service any additional usage. Without connectivity to the airport the extra traffic will be become a massive bottleneck to the local area.
