This proposed expansion must be stopped. It will significantly increase greenhouse gas emissions and destroy our ability to meet our internationally agreed climate targets. It will also create more pressure on the rail and road networks serving the airport, with 76 million more passengers per year adding to a further decline in air quality locally. The few jobs that might be created would be dwarfed by the potential number of jobs a Green Deal for Gatwick would provide, policy on which has already been proposed by the Green Party local to the area, and which would have countless other benefits for the local area including costing less to implement while returning more to the local economy. Lastly, the expansion undermines the government’s own aviation strategy. The proposal is for a new runway – not bringing an existing runway into regular use, as claimed.
