As an aviation expert with nearly 50 years of experience, I represent a number a organisations that express and represent the views and opinions of the senior players across the UK and international aviation industry. Please see my cv. (REDACTED) Throughout the years there have been numerous projects to increase airport capacity in London and the Southeast of England. None however have been as innovative as London Gatwick’s current scheme to bring its Northern Runway into regular use. It is simple and involves no land purchase, normally a problem with any large commercial project of this nature. It is a plus plus for the local community and businesses. And I might add that each year the aircraft get quieter and more environmentally friendly. Not only will the growth be balanced and incremental, but it will also be sustainable and will add vital growth to the whole region. Over 15,000 new jobs will be created and £1 billion will be injected into the local economy – every single year! The Northern Runway project is a shortcut that must not be defused, or delayed. I talk regularly to industry leaders about other nations driving new and exciting opportunities for airline innovation and passenger choice. We must not be left behind. London Gatwick’s Northern Runway works for UK Plc by generating new global connections and new business opportunities. Air cargo at London Gatwick is forecast to double if the airport’s growth plans are approved, not to mention the additional support for the construction industry, as well as for businesses and tourism interests across the region. I am always being told that new runway capacity in the London system is vital, and Gatwick’s proposed solution is a comparatively simple way to resolve this ongoing problem quickly and literally, ‘quietly’. In late 2023 we are already at 2019 passenger numbers. If Gatwick cannot offer capacity for the future others will quickly grasp the mantle, with the loss of business for the whole region. Luton has just got a capacity increase by the government inspectorate and Stansted is pushing ahead for more movements. I would like to convey my strong support for London Gatwick’s innovative and sustainable solution to the aviation capacity crisis that London and the Southeast will experience without this state-of-the-art scheme. I speak for a great many industry specialists and experts.
