Gatwick has an adequate runway already, with a backup runway. This would be a significant expansion allowing more aircraft traffic. More aircraft traffic would increase carbon emissions, increase noise at Gatwick and the origin/destination airports on each journey, and overload the local surface transport infrastructure. I do not believe that 'jet-zero' is likely to be achieved at acceptable cost. If growth in aircraft traffic does not happen - perhaps restrained on environmental or cost grounds - the money and embodied carbon invested in the new runway would be wasted.
