Opening up the 2nd (Emergency) runway would bring an unacceptable level of aircraft noise and air pollution to the surrounding residential areas. Additionally there appear to be no plans to improve the road infrastructure for the increased number of vehicles which would be created by both passengers and airport workers. Access from the A23 southbound is already woefully inadequate, with vehicles having to go to the the roundabout at the South Terminal to get to the North Terminal. There are also plans to build a business park on a tract of land between the Balcombe Road and the M23 Spur road with access from the South Terminal roundabout, which would add to the traffic chaos. I believe the owners of Gatwick have also behaved in a very underhand way by allowing the Government to spend millions of pounds on the "extra runway" consultation when they clearly intended to bring the Emergency Runway into use from the outset.
