Even now, without the additional runway increasing capacity, the noise from planes flying through the night is causing altered sleep patterns which have a detrimental effect on health and well-being. This is a recent development. It is not in the least clear how this project actively helps the local economy (other than increased employment at the airport) as it is facilitating people to travel and spend their money in other economies. Any economic benefits come at a huge environmental cost. An increase in flight capacity will increase price competitiveness and make travel cheaper. People are already moving towards more frequent and shorter trips which increases damage to the environment in terms of emissions, air pollution and noise (plus an increase in road traffic). This project should not be approved.
