First, this idea is barmy -- wildfires, floods, droughts, storms and sea level rises are now occurring every year as a result of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, put there by burning fossil fuel. Expanding flying is the opposite of what the government should be encouraging. This idiotic government, elected under the auspices of the idiot-in-chief, Johnson, appears to get everything wrong, but one thing it gets right is the funnelling of profits into the bank accounts of the already well-off, who have shares in airports, airlines, and companies selling aircraft fuel. Second, it's disingenuous -- it ISN'T the northern runway, it's the emergency runway. This is akin to the badly misnamed smart motorways, finally scrapped earlier this year, but not until 38 people had been avoidably killed; a collision involving aeroplanes at Gatwick could kill considerably more at once.
