We already suffer from high volumes of noise but at least with a single runway there is respite depending on which direction traffic is arriving/departing from and its accepted living in close proximity to an international airport. Furthermore this a plainly commercially driven to compete with other airports around London as Heathrow can deal with the larger aircraft with Gatwick are really after. Train services to the airport are already overloaded due the fact they serve many other destinations and there is no way the Brighton line can handle more trains unlike Heathrow which now has the Elizabeth line as well substantially boosting public transport capacity.
