The sound and emissions of aeroplanes on the eastern approach to Gatwick already have an unwelcome impact on our daily life - aircraft are making their final turns over Oenshurst and are supposed to be at 4000 feet but are regularly lower and disruptive to conversation outside or quiet inside. We particularly dislike their concentration at weekends and their continuance during the night. Less easy for us, rather than experts, to quantify is the impact on our local air quality and therefore our health. My family and I strongly object to any changes to infrastructure which would increase this damage to quality of life in our local community of Penshurst and other towns or villages on the approach to Gatwick. This is exactly what would be caused by expanded number of daily flights made possible if tge conversion of the emergency runway into a fully fledged runway is allowed. The last Davies commission rejected the need for a second runway at Gatwick. Since it’s findings, the need to restrain expansion of aviation in order to attain the policy of net zero increase in emission ms has become more pressing. Any decision to approve this proposal would fly in the face of achieving that policy. It is time for government to restrict the hold of the aviation industry over its ceaseless ambition to expand.
