The extension of the northern runway at Gatwick is a long-overdue decision and would release a lot of pressure on the air traffic management of the airport, allowing it to safely expand and reduce wasteful practices such as holding and ATC arrival slots. Mitigations have been suggested before such as limiting the use of the northerly runway to medium jets, or using one for take-off and one for landing. Gatwick needs to grow to compete and this is a sensible way forward with minimal impact on others. As a local resident I know how many of my neighbours work at and rely on the service of Gatwick Airport, and their support far outweighs the louder voice of a few who instinctively oppose anything that might affect their house price, create pollution, or create noise (these points can all be mitigated a number of ways, especially in the timeline involved in completing the expansion).
