It is essential that genuine measures are put in place to offset / mitigate against the inevitable increase in CO2 and other emissions that this planned upgrade will bring. Commissioning of a Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan that integrates with the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans for the surrounding areas would be a good start. Active Travel England, as a statutory consultee should be able to advise. Cycling and walking infrastructure needs to be planned into the upgrade from the outset, not added as an afterthought simply to tick boxes, and should meet or exceed the standards of the new walking & cycling shared use path that meets the Longbridge roundabout north of the Airport. If the facilities can match those provided at Amsterdam Schipol, so much the better. Secure cycle parking must also be provided.
