Gatwick’s expansion opponents have calculated that if the expansion plans were to be enacted in full their CO2 emissions would rise by over 50% and generate 5.5% of all UK CO2 emissions by 2038. It’s worth noting that the group estimated that “non CO2 factors increase aviation’s climate impact by 2-3 times.” (Source: Gatwick’s Big Enough, 2021) Of course, Gatwick will refute such claims by arguing that sustainably will be their priority though it’s very clear that the technology is unproven at best and greenwashing will be the order of the day. Furthermore, the combined authorities’ record on managing noise from aircraft associated with Gatwick and, I dare say, other airports is appalling. I refer to their consistent failure to ensure a fair and reasonable distribution of flight paths together with the appallingly low flight paths creating such a dreadful noise in areas of AONB in particular. This must not be allowed to proceed and the current operation needs a complete overhaul as it is.
