Gatwick has two runways now, but the second one is only used when the first one can't be. The plan is to have two runways that can be used simultaneously. The purpose of the second runway is presumably to cater for increased air traffic, but air traffic needs to be reduced NOW because of its large contribution to climate change, and to fulfil the government's stated policy of reaching net zero carbon by 2050. The increased air traffic will cause increased road and rail traffic, and they also need to be reduced, for the eame reason. Aircraft and road vehicles are becoming more efficient, but that doesn't justify increased air traffic. Carbon production must be reduced in every possible way, and as fast as possible.
