The building of another runway flies in the face of environmental commitments, contributing to further air and noise pollution in our skies. There will be an increase in road traffic, further congestion ,particularly on the M25 and M3 leading to even more air pollution as stationary cars are higher polluters. You may argue that there will be fewer petrol cars, which hopefully will be true, but there is still the PM2.5 pollution from brake and tyre wear, particularly with heavier cars. Government plans appear to put greater emphasis on road building rather than improve rail connections between Gatwick and other destinations. And they persist in awarding Southern the franchise in spite of its abysmal record. The increase in pollution from road traffic and the increased number of flights will have negative effects on health. More and more evidence is emerging about the mental and physical effects of poor air quality. The NHS can't cope as it is so what will increasing ill health of those exposed to poor air quality do to ease the pressure?
