Gatwick Airport Northern Runway

I have lived the last 36 years in Crawley. While it can be handy living near an international airport I feel that Gatwick Airport has managed with one main runway and an emergency runway, so why do they need to change to use both daily. We already have more than enough pollution in the Crawley area. I thought that the government was committed to reducing the use of fossil fuels so how does that reconcile with an increase in flights into and out of Gatwick. I have a [redacted] so need an inhaler at least twice a day. I really do not need more pollution from aircraft coming from the airport.
