Furpine Residents Association oppose the application by Gatwick Airport for a northern runway because: 1) it is a new runway and we believe that the applicant has misinterpreted the Government's Aviation Strategy runway policy as Gatwick does not have two runways that it can operate concurrently today and as such, it is proposing to construct a new runway which does not comply with the current policy. 2) A second new runway at Gatwick will impose a significant increase in aircraft noise, evidenced by the estimate that an additional 101,000 flights per year to a cap of 386,000 will be flown. 3) At a time when we are facing a climate emergency a new runway would add significantly to the emission of carbon and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere - Evidence CCC (2020) The Sixth Carbon Budget - Methodology Report (see www.theccc.org.uk) and further pollute and increase the health risk to local communities in the area. 4) Impact on the local and area infrastructure will be considerable. a) Gatwick main line station cannot be expanded and these plans will add an unacceptable burden to the line with an estimated 32m extra passengers. b) The main arterial route (M23) into and out of the airport will have to endure a huge increase in travel by freight, passenger and workers, resulting in a significant increase in congestion on the M23 and related routes and spill over into residential areas. This will lead to an inevitable decline in air quality. 5) Lack of affordable housing and supporting amenities and infrastructure locally to accommodate the large influx of workers.
