This proposal goes counter to our legal obligations to reach net zero emissions by 2050. It will not breach them in itself, but if passed the extra emissions would have to be compensated for in other sectors of the economy. It runs counter to the warnings of the government's own advisory body, the CCC. It cannot be part of any credible pathway to net zero. As a citizen of this country with grandchildren whose future is threatened by climate breakdown, I oppose it as an irresponsible proposal.
