The plans would effectively give Gatwick a new second runway, but Government policy is that any new runway in the South East should be at Heathrow. (Though we think that there shouldn't be any new runways at all!) The resulting expansion of flights would be a significant contributor to climate breakdown. (The Government's own climate advisors, the Committee on Climate Change, say there should be no airport expansion.) The plans will worsen air quality, and increase noise and disturbance for local residents. The plans mean new road building - and more pressure for housing in the region.
