As this is a "national infrastructure" matter then national voices should be taken into account: I cannot see how taking measures to increase airline traffic can be compatible with our international obligations to decrease CO2 emissions year on year. If anything we should be finding ways to retire this kind of infrastructure and to find an orderly means to do so at a national level. It may be argued that cleaner fuels, CCS and offsetting will cover it. To this we must note that these things are unproven technologies and years away from significant impact (if ever) and that offsetting is a moving target in a world where forests seem to be burning, wiping away offsetting impacts. The moral case for not expanding is right there.
