Reducing the emission of greenhouse gases is essential and urgent. Although emissions from aircraft are a small proportion of emissions generally aircraft are particularly heavy polluters including the production of water vapour through contrails. Unrestricted growth of air travel is likely to become a particular hazard in the future and it is urgent that steps are taken to reduce air travel to an absolute minimum. A second runway at Gatwick would fly in the face of this need and should not therefore go ahead.
