I am puzzled that whilst we try to protect our heritage and safeguard our future under the category of listed buildings, World Heritage sites, AONB, Green Belt, Conservation Areas, National Parks and a myriad of environmental controls, we fail to value what we hear as well as what we see; we have forgotten to look up and protect our sky. Excessive noise and pollution is suffered by the very large number of people living along the busy flight paths. I know ‘excessive’ can be understood subjectively, but in this case it has been studied, measured and quantified and published elsewhere, as have what is meant by ‘very large number of people’. It is a fact that the current situation has blighted parts of our wonderful heritage and plagued the peace and enjoyment of many. Increasing air traffic would increase the misery. ‘Leave nothing behind’ in terms of all types of pollution should be the gold standard of our legacy aims. Shame on those who don’t even try.
