Aviation is one of the activities which causes the most harm to our climate, partly because emissions at altitude have a significantly greater heating impact than those at ground level. We will all suffer severely if climate breakdown is not tackled vigorously this decade. The fact that five people lost their lives in Storm Babet gives us an indication of the type of disasters we would face increasingly often if we do not cut emissions stringently this decade. Moreover emissions from aviation are incurred mostly in pursuit of activities which are not vital. Therefore aviation needs to be cut even more stringently than, for instance, emissions due to home heating. The proposal for a second runway, which would lead to even more flights, is completely inappropriate. It must be rejected not only for the welfare of everyone alive today, but also to safeguard as bearable a future for our children and grandchildren as possible.
