As a local resident, living directly under the flightpath, I strongly object to the proposed second runway at Gatwick. Even now, the noise can be continuous, especially in summer, and it can be impossible to relax in your own garden. The prospect of an extra 100,000 flights a year with all the attendant noise and pollution issues is appalling, not to mention the resultant chaos on local roads with passenger number up by 70%. For Gatwick Airport to claim this is merely bringing into use an existing runway is ingenuous: the proposal is for a massive infrastructure build with huge effects on the local environment from new roads, new hotels, more than doubled car parking...my understanding is that Gatwick alone would be responsible for more than 5% of the UK's CO2 emissions! I also consider it monstrous that this project is being brought in 'by the back door': we have had an extremely thorough enquiry, chaired by Sir Howard Davies which concluded that Gatwick was wholly unsuitable as the site for an additional runway in the south east. How does this proposal fit in with our zero emissions policy by 2050? or our levelling up agenda...? I could go on but I do not wish to try your patience!
