In light of Gatwick Airport's expansion plans, I, as both a pilot and a local resident, wish to voice my concerns regarding the current operational challenges stemming from the insufficient number of aircraft stands. During peak times or periods of reduced air traffic flow, aircraft are often left waiting for available stands, resulting in the wasteful burning of fuel and heightened noise levels. It's my understanding that the existing expansion proposals do not account for a necessary 35% increase in stand capacity, potentially restricting the benefits of increased runway capacity. Moreover, I'd like to emphasise the following points. Induced Demand: The expansion of Gatwick's capacity could inadvertently lead to an increase in demand. Historically, when airports expand, airlines and passengers seize the opportunity to utilise the additional slots, quickly eroding any gains in capacity. This situation may result in congestion, leading to more air traffic, noise, pollution, and greater strain on local infrastructure. Environmental Considerations: As the aviation industry faces increasing scrutiny and regulation to mitigate its environmental impact, Gatwick's expansion plans must address not only its operational efficiency but also its carbon footprint and broader environmental consequences. These issues have a direct impact on the environmental quality and sustainability of the surrounding area. Community Concerns: Residents living in close proximity to the airport are affected by issues such as noise pollution, increased air traffic, and the burden on local infrastructure. Such as increased wear on road, the repair of such will be burdened of the local taxpayer not the Airport. I feel most of these concerns and others can be mitigated by limiting the number of aircraft movements at Gatwick much like Amsterdam Schiphol Airport has.
