I have serious concerns for the impact the expansion of Gatwick Airport will have on the residents and communities of rural villages in surrounding areas of Surrey, Sussex and Kent. Already the frequency and flight noise levels, especially during the summer months, affect our daily lives. Even the simplest things, like a game of cricket, a summer fete or conversing with children in the playground, become difficult when the noise of jet engines takes over. Many thousands of us have chosen to live in the countryside away from the noise, hustle and bustle of towns. Whilst recognising the necessity of good transport links surely the south east has sufficient of these already and I remain unconvinced that Gatwick needs to grow further. With the proposed increase in car parking facility at the airport, there is obviously an expectation of increased road traffic. Here in Capel our local lanes are used as a short cut to Gatwick by taxis and those employed at the airport. Presumably, with the advent of satnav systems, passengers travelling to and from the airport in their own cars also take advantage of these routes. Most of our lanes are already in need of greater maintenance. Is it really reasonable to expect Surrey County Council (i.e. us ratepayers) to pick up the inevitable cost of yet more repairs?
