I recently attended a presentation at Gatwick in my capacity as Chair of Horsham Trafalgar Neighbourhood Council. I asked how the dual aims of hugely increasing passenger numbers while hugely reducing carbon emmissions would both be achieved, and I found the answer less than convincing. In this ongoing climate and ecology crisis I feel protecting our clean air and re-balancing our climate for a more 'livable' planet for all is far more important than increasing the ability of a few people to travel quickly. My own experience in lockdown was that I could breathe more easily for the first time in many years, and insect numbers increased in a very dramatic and pleasing way. As 'back to normal' happened, both things reversed. Of course road traffic is in the mix, but air traffic certainly played a role. Clean air is such a basic need for EVERYONE.
